Ring in the new year with Chris Lewis and friends for a New Years Day fern hunt! The ferns due to early seasonal rain are incredible right now in this part of Upper Sunrise. Species include nested polypody, goldenback fern, coffee fern (yes it looks like a coffee bean), bird’s-foot fern, California maiden hair fern, and California wood fern.

Go to the Upper Sunrise entrance at 2098 South Bridge Street, meeting point is at this parking lot GOOGLE MAP PIN inside Upper Sunrise recreation area
Parking: Small gravel parking area close to trail, Sacramento County Vehicle fee $7 paid at entrance
What to Bring: water, hat, snack, binoculars, nature journals, cameras, and appropriate weather protection.
Walks are held unless heavy rain, extreme heat or very poor air quality are forecast. Cancellation notices posted by 7PM Thursday.
